The Ruen Brothers draw on dusky vocal harmonies and a fondness for twangy 1950s rock to summon the spirit of earlier rock and roll while charging it with fresh immediacy. The English duo first surfaced in London in 2013 via the rockabilly-flavored single "Aces," which prompted Republic Records to take notice. The brothers subsequently relocated to the United States and cut their debut album, the 2018 release All My Shades of Blue, alongside veteran producer Rick Rubin. Although their core palette continues to feature vintage rock, film noir, and western textures, later efforts such as 2021’s Ultramodern and 2023’s Ten Paces demonstrate the pair’s facility for merging those classic ingredients with a current pop sensibility.

Raised in the steel-making town of Scunthorpe, England, brothers Henry Stansall (lead singer and rhythm guitarist) and Rupert Stansall (singer and lead guitarist) absorbed music early through their father’s collection of vintage records. Those formative listens steeped them in the earthy styles of Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, and the Everly Brothers. During their teenage years the siblings, performing under the amalgamated name Ruen Brothers, began harmonizing on covers in local pubs and composing original songs. In time they shaped a signature approach that pairs mid-century rock foundations with noir-tinged lyrics and a pronounced theatricality reminiscent of David Lynch.

Following their relocation to London around 2013, the pair maintained a modest flat and alternated between recording sessions and return trips to Scunthorpe for pub performances. During this phase they posted several tracks online, among them submissions to the BBC Music Introducing app. Airplay for “Aces” soon followed, drawing attention from listeners and industry figures alike. The Ruen Brothers secured a deal with Republic Records, performed at Austin’s South by Southwest Festival, and supported George Ezra on tour. After settling in Los Angeles they tracked their Rick Rubin-produced debut, the 2018 album All My Shades of Blue.

In 2020 the duo placed the song “Break the Rules” on the soundtrack for the Netflix coming-of-age film The Half of It. The following year brought their second album, Ultramodern, whose title offers a wry nod to the 1950s fascination with modernism; the record further fuses the brothers’ rock and country-and-western roots with shrewd, frequently synth-tinted contemporary pop elements. They sustained this cross-era and cross-genre strategy on 2023’s Ten Paces, uniting pop hooks with their longstanding affinity for classic noir and western soundtracks.
