Biography
During their teenage years in northern Sweden amid the peak of grunge, the quartet known as Sahara Hotnights sought an outlet to escape suburban ennui. Maria Andersson handled vocals and guitars, Josephine Forsman took the drums, and the Asplund sisters—Jennie on guitars and Johanna on bass—came together to form the group. Drawing from the sounds of Blondie, The Clash, and The Ramones, they channeled seventies punk rock into a distinctive post-grunge style that was both stylish and fresh. Their initial effort, the independently released EP Suits Anyone Fine, earned widespread praise across Europe upon its 1997 arrival, quickly leading to further opportunities. A deal with the Swedish imprint Speech followed, resulting in the release of three additional singles over the subsequent two years: "Face Wet," "Oh Darling," and "Nothing Yet." The band's first full-length studio album, C'mon, Let's Pretend, emerged in 1999 and garnered two nominations at the Swedish Grammys.
This momentum carried them forward without pause. By the start of the new millennium, Sahara Hotnights had departed their unremarkable hometown of Umea and secured a contract with BMG in the United Kingdom. The Drive Dead Slow EP came out in April 2000, as preparations began for their second album. Jennie Bomb reflected a heightened sense of assurance from the group. In their early twenties, the band's internal chemistry reached new heights, complemented by their increasingly polished playing. Recognition arrived in the United States during mid-2002, when Sahara Hotnights partnered with JetSet to prepare Jennie Bomb for an American release scheduled for September. Two years after that, they achieved their major label bow on RCA via the album Kiss & Tell.
