Biography
Born in 1978 and raised in Lisbon, Afro-Portuguese songwriter Sara Tavares grew up as a second-generation Portuguese citizen of Cape Verdean descent. After her father departed for the United States in search of improved prospects and her mother headed south for the same reason, an elderly community matriarch oversaw her upbringing. Early signs of musical talent surfaced in childhood and were nurtured through her teenage years. At sixteen she captured the Endemol competition Chuva de Estrelas and then triumphed at the 1994 Portuguese Television Song Contest, securing a place at Eurovision. The winning entry “Chamar a Musica” appeared on her first single, the 1996 release “Sara Tavares & Shout,” which fused gospel and funk with her Portuguese roots. Working in Portuguese, Crioulo, and English, Tavares addressed her own displaced generation of Cape Verdeans and Afro-European immigrants seeking to articulate their singular identity. Her second album, Mi Ma Bo, arrived on RCA in 1999 and shifted toward Afro-pop; the project earned gold status in Portugal and established her as a national figure. Five years later her independently issued third album, Balancê, arrived in 2006. Tavares composed its entire tracklist and expanded her performing credits to include percussion alongside guitar and vocals. Conveying themes of hope and self-worth, the record positioned her among the diaspora’s most singular and resonant creative forces. On November 19, 2023, while undergoing treatment for a brain tumor, Sara Tavares died at the age of 45.
