Formed in Portugal, Madredeus brought together vocalist Teresa Salgueiro, guitarists José Peixoto and Pedro Ayres Magalhães, violin player Francisco Ribeiro, harmonica player Gabriel Gomes, and keyboard player Rodrigo Leão. Drawing from the sounds of Lisbon, the ensemble toured across Europe and gained particular favor in Belgium. Their first recording, Os Dias da Madredeus, appeared in 1987; Existir arrived three years afterward, and Lisboa Live followed in 1992 on Blue Note. The group also featured in Wim Wenders’s 1994 film Lisbon Story (Viagem A Lisboa), where Ayres Magalhães and Salgueiro took on quite prominent roles. Two further albums emerged in 1995—Ainda and O Espiritu Da Paz—while O Porto surfaced in 1999. Antologia came out the next year, and Movimento arrived in summer 2001. Madredeus’ musical machine continued into the next year; he switched up his inviting nature for the eclectic electronic remix effort Electronico in summer 2002.
