Sérgio Godinho ranks among the foremost influences on Portuguese popular music throughout the second half of the twentieth century. His command of seven instruments earned him the moniker ‘the man of 7 instruments,’ while his dual reputation as songwriter and instrumentalist drew broad admiration. Although music formed the core of his public identity, Godinho also built a substantial body of published poetry and performed as an actor on stage and in film. Born in Porto, Portugal, in 1945, he devoted his early adulthood to extended stays abroad before committing to a solo career. Time spent in Brazil, Canada, and the Netherlands preceded his first recording sessions, which took place in France in 1971.

The debut album Os Sobreviventes brought him the title “Author of the Year,” and its successor Pre-Histórias, issued the following year, received “Album of the Year.” News of the revolution at home drew Godinho back to Portugal soon afterward. His third studio recording, made locally, met with immediate enthusiasm from listeners. Titled Á Queima-Roupa and released in 1974, the album introduced him to the wider Portuguese public and established him as a star. Subsequent releases appeared roughly every other year, anchoring Godinho firmly in the nation’s cultural life and securing his lasting place in Portuguese musical history. Commercial success continued undiminished in later decades; the 2008 album Nove e Neia no Maria Matos, for instance, entered the Top 40 on the Portuguese Pop charts more than three decades after his debut.
