Rui Veloso, the singer and songwriter frequently celebrated as the "Father of Portuguese Rock," was born in Lisbon before his family relocated to Porto soon afterward. Exceptional musical ability appeared early, as he became proficient on harmonica at six and began playing guitar at fifteen. In his teens he formed the Magara Blues Band, channeling the style of blues masters B.B. King, Muddy Waters, and Eric Clapton while performing in regional bars. A meeting with lyricist Carlos Té in 1976 launched a lasting partnership that produced several of the genre’s biggest hits. His connection to EMI started in 1979, and the debut album Ar de Rock appeared the next year. Rapid popularity accompanied his steady productivity, reaching a peak with the platinum self-titled release in 1986. Through the 1980s and 1990s he retained a devoted domestic audience by limiting tours and sales to Portugal rather than pursuing international markets. In 1990 a longstanding ambition came true when he performed alongside B.B. King at the Coliseu do Porto. The platinum album Lado Lunar arrived in 1996, followed by a second onstage collaboration with King. Two decades of activity were marked in 2000 with the GAIE honor of “Most Authentic Bluesman,” an accolade from the organization comparable to BMI or ASCAP. Regular writing and performing continued, yielding 25 platinum albums by 2005 with no evident reduction in output.
