Rebecca Taylor, who records as Self Esteem, brings the honed songwriting craft developed in Slow Club into sharper focus by layering it with electronic pop textures. While her contributions to Slow Club favored indie and folk palettes, the Self Esteem project leans instead into R&B and outsized pop gestures, a shift that also encouraged more introspective material on her first solo album, Compliments Please.

After more than ten years sharing duties in Slow Club with Charles Watson, Taylor began steering toward a distinct direction, a divergence already audible on the duo’s 2016 album One Day All of This Won't Matter Anymore, where her songs and Watson’s moved in separate stylistic currents. The pair dissolved the project in 2017 to concentrate on solo work, and Taylor issued her opening Self Esteem single, “Your Wife,” later that year. Over the following two years she balanced touring commitments with recording her debut full-length, 2019’s Compliments Please, produced by Dave Mclean of Django Django.
