Having launched their separate careers amid the D.I.Y. ferment of 1990s San Francisco, Johnny "Shellhead" and Jen Shag oversaw operations at the storied Starcleaners Warehouse, the Mission District co-op that once housed the Residents, the Dandy Warhols, and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Their routes intersected while Johnny played in 50 Million and Jen performed with Static Faction, prompting the pair to launch the power pop trio Kung Fu USA. In 2003 they reduced the lineup and relaunched as the Brooklyn indie duo Shellshag. Fusing No Age-style noise punk with the guileless charm of the Moldy Peaches, they logged endless road miles, drawing attention for high-energy shows that featured Jen drumming on her feet and Johnny closing each set with roaring guitar feedback. Pavement's Gary Young recorded their debut, the now out-of-print Gary Young EP, in 2004, and Destroy Me I'm Yours appeared in 2007.
