Marcus Lambkin, who grew up in Dublin, Ireland, relocated to New York in the first half of the 1990s and quickly became a fixture in its nightlife, holding multiple club residencies as a DJ. Only after settling in Stuttgart, Germany, did he launch a production and remix career under the name Shit Robot, the result of a 2006 partnership with LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy for a party whose title poked fun at the latter’s limited drawing ability. Between April 2006 and March 2010 he placed four left-field house singles—blends of electro, deep house, classic Detroit techno, and old-school rave—on the DFA imprint run by Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy, while also delivering remixes for Dondolo, Kaos, Simian Mobile Disco, Idioma, and fellow traveler Juan Maclean. The activity naturally expanded his booking calendar, sending him to perform across the globe and leading to the September 2010 release of his debut album, From the Cradle to the Rave, on DFA. In the ensuing period he maintained a steady schedule of DJ dates and remixes, adding the 2012 single “Teenage Bass”/“Space Race.” Early 2014 brought the follow-up full-length We Got a Love, which included contributions from Nancy Whang, Reggie Watts, Luke Jenner of the Rapture, and Chicago house veteran Lidell Townsell. Further remixes for Prinzhorn Dance School and Tippy Toes appeared in 2015 alongside the collaborative “Rishi” single with Kai P and Rino S. What Follows, his third album, arrived in May 2016 and showcased Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip, Patrick Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem, Nancy Whang, and Juan Maclean, the last of whom also handled mixing duties on numerous tracks.
