Biography
Though often likened to a German counterpart of Eminem—a parallel rooted in far more than shared complexion—rapper Sido drew sharp rebuke from lawmakers, families, and critics alike for his raw lyrics steeped in misogyny, brutality, and explicit sexuality. Paul Würdig entered the world in Berlin on November 30, 1980, initially coining his stage name from the phrase “Schieße in dein Ohr,” rendered in English as “Sh*t in your ear.” Years afterward he asserted the moniker actually stood for “super-intelligentes Drogenopfer,” or “Super-intelligent drug victim.” He cultivated an instantly recognizable image by never appearing without his signature silver skull mask. In 2004 he joined the Aggro Berlin roster and delivered his first album, Maske. The record achieved striking commercial success, moving nearly 200,000 units thanks in large part to the single “Mein Block,” which chronicled crime and hardship in the Märkisches Viertel district he calls home. Another cut, “Arschificksong,” offered a stark and sensationalized depiction of an abusive sexual encounter that caught the eye of Germany’s Federal Office for Media Harmful to Young Persons, though the track ultimately escaped inclusion on the agency’s list of prohibited material. The resulting furor only amplified his visibility, paving the way for his second album, Ich, which arrived in late 2006. His third full-length, Ich und Meine Maske, surfaced in 2008, topped the German album charts, and found receptive audiences across the broader German-speaking region. Riding that momentum, Sido surprised many observers by serving as a judge on the television program Popstars that same year. After Aggro Berlin shuttered in 2009, he moved to the Universal imprint Urban Records and released his fourth album, also titled Aggro Berlin. In 2010 he became the first German rapper invited to perform on MTV’s Unplugged, delivering newly arranged acoustic renditions of his best-known songs; the appearance marked a decisive shift in his trajectory and was documented on the album MTV Unplugged: Live Aus'm MV. A seven-year feud with fellow rapper Bushido—sparked when Bushido departed the Aggro Berlin label over creative disagreements—finally ended in 2011, when the two artists reconciled and issued the joint project 23.
