Skint & Demoralised formed as a partnership between Matt Abbott, serving as vocalist and lyricist, and David Gledhill, who produces and composes under the name MiNI dOG. Their tracks combine sharp wordplay with grooves that blend indie rock, funk, and R&B. Abbott occasionally handles melodies but typically delivers his lines in a direct, pressing tone reminiscent of a streetwise poet, while Gledhill shapes the instrumental support underneath. Early online sharing of their material helped build a modest audience and secured a contract with a major label for the 2009 debut Love & Other Catastrophes, an album drawing from Northern soul alongside indie rock textures. Although that project was withdrawn just before release, the pair moved to an independent outlet and issued their follow-up, 2011's This Sporting Life, which shifted emphasis toward prominent guitar lines and reduced the rhythmic drive. Electronic touches appeared on the 2013 album The Bit Between the Teeth. After a break, the duo resurfaced in 2019 with the single "Boro Kitchen 4am" via Fierce Panda, revealing a harder edge and increased political focus.

The project began in 2007 when Wakefield native Matt Abbott, previously a stand-up comic, started crafting observational and activist poetry influenced by Linton Kwesi Johnson and John Cooper Clarke. He uploaded rough recordings of his work, prompting producer David Gledhill to propose a collaboration that paired the spoken pieces with backing tracks. A demo received coverage in New Musical Express, and another reached BBC Radio 1's Steve Lamacq, who aired "Red Lipstick." Subsequent plays attracted interest from major labels, leading to a March 2008 signing with Mercury, distributed through Universal. Abbott and Gledhill recorded their initial album in New York City alongside members of the Dap-Kings. Singles such as "The Thrill of Thirty Seconds," "This Song Is Definitely Not About You," and "Red Lipstick" drew favorable reviews, yet sales fell short of expectations, prompting Mercury to cancel the release of Love & Other Catastrophes and drop the act.

Retaining ownership of the shelved material, Skint & Demoralised partnered with Heist or Hit Records, which issued both the 2011 album This Sporting Life and a long-delayed version of Love & Other Catastrophes, available separately or as a combined set. The band completed a 20-date U.K. tour and topped bills at two German festivals. Recording for The Bit Between the Teeth took place in 2012, with the finished record appearing in April 2013 on the same day as Margaret Thatcher's death, limiting media coverage. Limited attention followed, and the duo entered hiatus. Earlier, two tracks had featured in the third season of the British series Gavin & Stacey, which first aired in 2010; as James Corden's profile rose, later broadcasts and DVD editions exposed the music to fresh listeners. Gledhill reached out to Abbott in November 2018 about resuming work, resulting in the 2019 album Boro Kitchen 4am on Fierce Panda.
