Biography
Slam Donahue, a lo-fi pop outfit based in Brooklyn, first came together during 2009 in Wolcott, Connecticut, when singer and guitarist David Otto joined forces with bassist Thomas Sommerville. Both musicians were self-taught and had crossed paths years earlier, drawn to one another by an intense curiosity about pop’s past. They soon found common ground in the glam and pop albums from the 1970s that filled their parents’ shelves, sparking an informal rivalry: each would produce home demos in an effort to outdo the other with sharper hooks, stronger melodies, or greater sonic drive. After cycling through several additional players, the founding pair relocated to Brooklyn in 2010, where they began performing regularly while laying down rudimentary recordings of their earliest material. Drummer Keenan Mitchell completed the lineup shortly afterward, and the three spent extended stretches writing and tracking new pieces. Those sessions yielded the lo-fi online mixtape Big House Nice Dreams, issued in spring 2012, followed that August by the Hemlock Tea EP. Work on their first full-length album continued, with a release planned for sometime in 2013.
