Biography
From an early age Panama-born singer and songwriter Sofía Valdés channeled her soft, airy voice into tales of complicated relationships, steadily attracting listeners with a sincere yet polished approach to her craft. Tracks such as “Little Did I Know” and “Handful of Water” generated early attention, leading to the February 2021 arrival of her first EP, Ventura. Two further EPs followed: the poetic and amorous In Bloom in May 2022 and the contemplative Silvia in 2023, both preceding her self-titled full-length debut in October 2024.
As the granddaughter of celebrated Cuban vocalist Miguelito Valdés, Valdés nurtured musical aspirations well before picking up the guitar at eight. Her formative listening spanned Nick Drake to João Gilberto, and she produced her initial compositions at thirteen. Acceptance to Michigan’s Interlochen Arts Academy allowed her to refine both her songwriting and her command of English; she later moved to the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts in the United Kingdom. Warner Records signed her in early 2020. While the COVID-19 pandemic restricted outside activity, she began laying down material written during her teenage years, unveiling the woozy, introspective “Little Did I Know” in September 2020. The bilingual “Handful of Water” appeared the next month, followed in December by her cover of Gwen Stefani’s “The Sweet Escape.” January 2021 brought the subdued, guitar-led “Lonely.” Ventura collected these singles alongside three additional songs, letting her sensitive delivery trace arcs of affection, yearning, and personal growth across an array of indie-pop and bossa-nova textures. In Bloom returned in May 2022 with similarly romantic and lyrical sensibilities. The 2023 EP Silvia took its name from her great-grandmother; several cuts, among them the title track, resurfaced on the ten-song album Sofía Valdés issued in October 2024. Intimate and self-examining, the record explored her lineage through the prism of present-day life in Los Angeles and included appearances by DannyLux and Cuco.
