Biography
Carlos Colorado, who fronted La Sonora Santanera, had already performed with a local orquesta in his native Barra de Santa Ana; only after relocating to Mexico City did the ensemble known as Tropical Santanera come together. The musicians performed at private gatherings throughout the capital, which drew the notice of promoter Jesús "Palillo" Martínez and secured them an engagement at the Follies Bergere Theater. At that point the group adopted the name La Sonora Santanera, mixing various dance-oriented styles, and signed with CBS Mexico in 1960. Their initial successes followed soon after with the releases "La Boa" and "Los Aretes de la Luna."
Throughout the 1960s the band maintained its popularity and later adopted the expanded title La International Sonora Santanera de Carlos Colorado. After Colorado perished in a car accident in 1986, the ensemble disbanded for a time. In 1997 surviving members reconvened to issue Como en los Buenos Tiempos in an effort to recapture the group's characteristic sound.
