The professional path of Dominican performer Alberto Beltran opened when he triumphed in a talent competition backed by a neighborhood radio outlet. After his time with the group Brisas de Oriente, the tropical singer relocated to Cuba and entered the ranks of the storied Sonora Matancera, an ensemble once called Septeto Soprano, before making his home in Mexico and Venezuela and reaching American stages for the very first time in 1962. Alberto Beltran captured the enduring Latin standard “El Negrito del Batey” during November 1954, an effort that immediately supplied him with that lasting nickname.
