Spock's Beard came together in 1992 after Neal, who handled lead vocals, joined his brother Al Morse on guitar along with drummer Nick D'Virgilio. Once the group self-financed their debut effort, bassist Dave Meros came aboard and The Light was laid down in 1994. Built from four extended tracks, the record earned praise among progressive rock listeners yet drew scant mainstream notice. Ryo Okumoto stepped in on keyboards during 1995. The Official Bootleg surfaced the next year as a concert document that presented the entire first album plus a preview track from the follow-up. That same year the band secured deals with several international labels while issuing Beware of Darkness, which retained the established musical approach but confined most selections to ten minutes or shorter aside from the closing piece that exceeded fifteen minutes. The Kindness of Strangers arrived as the third studio album at the close of 1997, Day for Night appeared in 1999, and V came out a year after that.

After concluding they possessed the seasoning needed for a concept work, the musicians devoted the ensuing period to crafting Snow. The resulting double album centered on an albino teenager who might represent the Messiah. Pursuing a far more intricate treatment of the material, the group endured a demanding two-year writing process yet gained substantial marketing support from Metal Blade Records. Neal Morse departed soon after Snow to pursue life as a born-again Christian. The others reformed without delay, placing D'Virgilio on lead vocals, and issued Feel Euphoria the year after. The opening three albums received reissues in 2004, while 2005 brought both the fresh studio set Octane and the concert recording Live in 2005: Gluttons for Punishment. Their self-titled ninth studio album followed in 2006, succeeded by the tenth, X, in 2010. Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep marked their return three years later, introducing singer Ted Leonard and replacing D'Virgilio with drummer Jimmy Keegan. The Oblivion Particle reached listeners in 2015 and restored D'Virgilio to the lineup, after which Snow Live appeared in 2017 as a full rendering of the celebrated concept album performed by the original members together with additional musicians. Noise Floor became the thirteenth studio release in 2018.
