Brothers Bryan and Douglass Enas launched Stagnant Pools in Bloomington, Indiana. Bryan, the older sibling, received a bass guitar during eighth grade, prompting the pair to begin making music together at an early age. They soon appeared in various local groups, Bryan switching between bass and later guitar while Douglass held the drum chair. In 2009, Bryan’s freshman year at college, the two performed solely as Stagnant Pools, Bryan handling guitar and vocals with Douglass on drums. That same year they started capturing their spare yet sonically dense, hypnotic fusion of noise pop and classic indie rock in the mold of Joy Division and the Strokes, while gigging throughout Bloomington and sharing bills with Japandroids and EMA. By summer 2011 they had completed enough material for a full album and signed with Polyvinyl. The melancholic and noisy Temporary Room arrived in late summer 2012. After touring, the brothers returned to their Bloomington base and resumed writing new material together. After trimming an initial twenty songs down to ten, they entered the studio for the follow-up. The noisier, even more brooding Geist came out in June 2014.
