The three-piece Cloakroom assembled in the Midwest during 2012, coining the phrase “stoner emo” for their lumbering, guitar-dominated approach that merged hardcore muscle, the hazy textures of shoegaze, and the wistful strains of 1990s indie outfits such as Hum and Red House Painters. After their first release in 2013, the band has delivered two EPs and three studio albums: Further Out in 2015, Time Well in 2017, and Dissolution Wave in 2022.

Formed in Michigan City, Indiana, the group comprised guitarist and vocalist Doyle Martin, previously the frontman of pop-punk act the Grown-Ups, alongside drummer Brian Busch and bassist Bobby Markos. Their debut EP Infinity surfaced in 2013 on Run for Cover, followed in 2015 by the expanded double album Further Out on the same imprint. Before issuing their second full-length, Time Well, in 2017, they signed with Relapse and promoted the record with a European tour alongside Canadian post-rockers Caspian. The forceful single “A Force at Play” arrived in 2021 and appeared on the band’s third album, the space western-themed Dissolution Wave, in 2022.
