Biography
Belgium-based shoegaze outfit Slow Crush traverses wide dynamic extremes, alternating between dense blasts of distortion and airy dream pop textures from one track to the next. Fronted by vocalist and bassist Isa Holliday, whose prior work lay in sludge metal, the group readily draws on heavier textures, yet the overall sound remains lighter than that of her earlier project, Hearserider. The notion of contrast runs through their catalogue from the start, beginning with the 2018 arrival of debut album Aurora.
Guitarists Jan Jouck and Jelle Ronsmans, together with drummer Steven Cammaerts, joined Holliday in moving quickly from the band’s first live appearance in 2017 to entering the studio. Late that year the quartet settled into Southampton’s Ranch studios alongside producer Neil D. Kennedy, whose résumé includes Milk Teeth, Creeper and Boston Manor. The recordings later reached The Atomic Gardens for mastering by Jack Shirley, known for work with Deafheaven, Oathbreaker and The Smith Street Band. The completed album surfaced the following year through Flood Records, Dingleberry Records and White Russian. In 2019 the band reissued its earlier EP Ease, which had largely escaped notice, augmenting the release with alternate versions of material from Aurora.
