True Widow emerged in 2007 as a heavy and melodic outfit when Dan Phillips, previously with Slowride, came back to Dallas, Texas following a hiatus from music and took up the roles of singer and guitarist. The group quickly formed after enlisting Nicole Estill on vocals and bass alongside drummer Timothy Starks, crafting a style equally inspired by drone, post-rock, and shoegaze through rumbling guitars, expansive tracks, and ethereal vocals drenched in reverb. Their debut album arrived self-titled in 2008, leading to a 2010 signing with Kemado Records, which also housed the Sword, fellow Texans. The following year saw the issuance of their second album, the grandly named As High as the Highest Heavens and from the Center to the Circumference of the Earth. Relapse put out their third record, Circumambulation, in 2013. For the 2016 release of the melancholic Avvolgere, they once again worked with Matt Pence, who had produced Circumambulation.
