Biography
Stars of Track and Field started out as a four-piece indie rock group, yet the loss of their bassist prompted a shift toward electronics that recast the remaining members as a trio. Their first EP, You Came Here for Sunset Last Year, appeared in May 2005. A planned full-length album titled Centuries Before Love and War was originally set for June 2006, but the Portland-based outfit—Kevin Calaba on vocals, guitar, and keyboard; Jason Bell on guitar and vocals; and Daniel Orvik on drums and programming—delayed the project after signing with Wind-Up Records, a rock-focused imprint that had previously hosted Creed and Evanescence. Further momentum arrived when the band joined Jeremy Enigk of Sunny Day Real Estate for a summer 2006 tour, after which Centuries Before Love and War surfaced as a digital release in August, followed by its physical edition in January 2007. By 2009 the trio had left behind the analog and digital experiments of their debut, turning instead toward direct pop and rock arrangements on A Time for Lions, which arrived that September.
