Steve Gorn commands the bamboo flute with exceptional mastery. Having studied under the late bansuri master Sri Gour Goswami of Calcutta, he extends that lineage through fresh recordings and live performances. Beyond multiple acclaimed solo projects such as the 1994 release Luminous Ragas, which presents four North Indian classical ragas, he has worked alongside numerous figures in world and jazz music. The 1979 album Asian Journal was made with Nana Vasconcelos and Badal Roy, while the 1993 recording Steel and Bamboo paired him with stainless steel flute player Robert Dick. His flute also appears on projects by Glenn Velez, Andreas Vollenweider, Jai Uttal, Laura Simms, Graham Parker, Priscilla Herdman, Najima and Jack DeJohnette. In 1995 he joined DeJohnette for concerts across Europe and Africa. After earning a master’s degree in music composition from Pennsylvania State University, Gorn deepened his grasp of eastern traditional and classical idioms through extended visits to India, Japan and Indonesia. He has performed as featured soloist at festivals in Berlin, the Netherlands and Munich. Working with MIDI synthesizers, Gorn has created music for films, videos, theater and dance, among them Jean Claude van Hallies’ adaptation of The Tibetan Book of the Dead, an ABC-TV special on the New York Jewish Museum and the PBS series The Quiet Revolution.
