Stolas, a group fusing progressive sensibilities with post-hardcore, assembled in Las Vegas, Nevada during 2011. Their name emerged as an anagram drawn from the phrase "Sail The Ocean, Live At Sea." Founding members included Carlo Marquez on drums and Jason Weiche on guitar and vocals, both formerly of Akashic Record, plus bassist R.J. Reynolds and guitarist Sergio Medina, who had previously played in Elessar. The four-piece laid down its first tracks on the EP Losing Wings, which appeared under their own imprint in 2012. They soon joined Blue Swan Records, which issued the debut album Living Creatures, Decoy Music in 2013. Follow-up Allomaternal surfaced in late 2014, spurring relentless road work. Weiche exited Stolas the next year, so the trio pressed ahead and began shaping songs for a subsequent record. Equal Vision Records welcomed the band in late 2016, and the imprint put out their self-titled third album the following March. Bassist Reynolds departed shortly after that release, leaving only two original members in the fold.
