Biography
Originating from Olympia, Washington, Strange Wilds carry forward the Pacific Northwest rock lineage of the 1980s and 1990s with their sharp, high-intensity sound rooted in grunge, punk, and noise rock. The group formed in 2012 when guitarist and vocalist Steven—whose bandmates likewise prefer to withhold surnames—staged a concert at his house and crossed paths with Sean, a Boise, Idaho native whose act appeared on the lineup. The two kept in contact, and after Sean moved to Olympia for college, Steven proposed they start a band. Adding two further musicians, they called the project Wet and began performing up and down the West Coast. Following the breakup of that original lineup in 2014, Steven and Sean recruited drummer Allen and adopted the name Strange Wilds. The earlier moniker Wet was repurposed as the title of their debut four-song EP, which stirred considerable regional interest and led Sub Pop Records—the storied indie imprint that helped spark the 1980s grunge explosion—to offer the band a contract. Sub Pop issued Strange Wilds’ three-song 7" single in early 2015, pairing “Standing” with “Gator Cough” and “Never Warm.” Their first full-length album, Subjective Concepts, followed in July 2015.
