Biography
Swan Dive’s bright, melody-driven pop took shape in Nashville when singer, songwriter, and guitarist Bill DeMain teamed with vocalist Molly Felder to launch the project in 1993. Although the pair scored three Top Ten singles in Japan and logged repeated radio and television appearances there, they never crossed over to mainstream audiences at home, instead channeling the melodic craft of Burt Bacharach, Simon & Garfunkel, and the Beatles. Before turning to music full-time, DeMain served as an editor at Performing Songwriter Magazine and later lent his talents to sessions with Jill Sobule, Marshall Crenshaw, and Yuko Yamaguchi. Felder likewise contributed to recordings by Sixpence None the Richer and Amy Grant. After several international releases in the late ’90s, the group issued its self-titled U.S. debut on Compass in mid-2000; the album gathered material from earlier overseas projects, including the Japanese Top Ten singles “You’re Beautiful,” “Wintergreen,” and “Circle.” Swan Dive returned with its follow-up, June, in July 2002.
