Biography
Among Atlanta's most reflective and resolute rappers is SwaVay, whose trap-rooted beats underpin lyrics that shift from introspective personal scrutiny to sharp social commentary. Since emerging as a teenager, he has advanced methodically across nearly ten years, amassing a body of self-released material that encompasses several complete projects. His profile surged with the 2019 single "2 AM," issued after his placement on the Grammy-nominated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack. Subsequent affiliation with Def Jam via Giant Music yielded the 2022 album Almetha's Son and the 2024 EP BILLY. Metro Boomin, James Blake, and Jeff Gitelman number among the prominent collaborators he has enlisted.
Born Andre Jones in Atlanta, SwaVay issued his first recording, Poet Talk, while still in high school in 2012. After maintaining a subdued presence that produced the 2016 album Before Eye Die, he drew Metro Boomin's interest through the 2017 track "QuickTrip," which led to Metro's production of "2 AM" for the 2019 project Pure Infinity. The Metro connection, alongside SwaVay's appearance on DJ Khalil's "Elevate" from the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack alongside Denzel Curry, Cordae, and Trevor Rich, elevated the single to his strongest commercial showing at the time.
Though SwaVay became the inaugural signee to Metro Boomin's Republic-linked Boominati Worldwide imprint and released the three-track Pure Pack in 2019, he soon reverted to his original independent outlet Dolo and distributed recordings such as B4DALBUM throughout 2020 and 2021. Giant Music and Def Jam subsequently combined forces to advance his career. The 2022 singles "Jugg," produced by 20 Rocket and Whatupkali, and "Faces," produced by Jeff Gitelman, preceded the October arrival of the full-length Almetha's Son. James Blake, who had included SwaVay on his own Friends That Break Your Heart, contributed production to the album, which featured the autobiographical centerpiece "Go Shorty" and received an expanded deluxe edition in 2023. The five-track EP BILLY appeared the following year.
