Biography
Fronted by Sabrina Ellis and Andrew Cashen, the lively and intricately textured indie outfit Sweet Spirit first surfaced in 2015 as an offshoot of the Austin rock band A Giant Dog. Drawing from sources as varied as Robyn, Roy Orbison, and T. Rex, the group blended exuberant pop and rock & roll flair with touches of country, disco, and other styles throughout its three studio albums.
Ellis and Cashen, seeking space for ideas beyond A Giant Dog’s barroom punk scope, assembled an expansive nine-piece lineup of Sweet Spirit and cultivated local support in Austin ahead of the 2015 release Cokomo on the Austin-based indie label Nine Mile Records. Also that year, a two-song joint single with Spoon’s Britt Daniel expanded their visibility, while the 2017 Steve Berlin-produced follow-up St. Mojo added further notice. After redirecting attention to A Giant Dog for several years, Sweet Spirit resurfaced in 2020 as a six-piece act signed to Merge Records, issuing its label debut Trinidad that May.
