Singer and songwriter Thad Cockrell approaches his craft without hesitation when revealing deep personal feelings. His compositions expose intimate reflections on affection and identity, while his live shows convey intensity through sincere delivery rather than theatrical excess. Early recordings placed him within country and folk traditions, notably through the 2003 release Warmth & Beauty and the 2005 project Begonias, which paired him with former Whiskeytown vocalist Caitlin Cary. Following a hiatus from the industry, he resurfaced in the indie pop duo Leagues before issuing the 2020 solo album If in Case You Feel the Same, marking a decisive shift toward modern pop textures.

Born one of four sons to a Baptist minister, Cockrell grew up primarily in Tampa, Florida, where secular music remained off-limits inside the family home. Only after departing for higher education—first pursuing journalism at Liberty University, established by Jerry Falwell, then enrolling at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest—did he gain freedom to explore musical interests. Acquiring a stereo, he cultivated wide-ranging preferences that included the Everly Brothers, Willie Nelson, and the Cure among his early influences. He began composing songs, and upon relocating to North Carolina he joined forces with the Starlite Country Band, an informal ensemble that also featured Caitlin Cary alongside Skillet Gilmore of Whiskeytown. Planning a demo, Cockrell booked studio time with dB's founder Chris Stamey engineering; Stamey deemed the songs ready for official release, resulting in the 2001 debut Stack of Dreams. That record secured a contract with Yep Roc Records, leading Stamey to produce Warmth & Beauty in 2003, an effort that enlisted Tift Merritt, Mitch Easter of Let's Active, and Jen Gunderman of the Jayhawks. Begonias followed in 2005 as a joint venture with Caitlin Cary, the pair co-authoring material and trading vocal duties.

Though the first three albums drew favorable notices, commercial returns stayed modest, prompting a move to Nashville aimed at sustaining himself through songwriting. Placements appeared on projects by Mindy Smith, Donavon Frankenreiter, and Courtney Jaye, yet dissatisfaction with the city led him back to North Carolina. After the 2009 album To Be Loved, exhaustion with the business prompted a temporary withdrawal. Reentry came through an unexpected direction when he formed the dance-oriented indie pop outfit Leagues alongside Jeremy Lutito. Their debut You Belong Here surfaced in 2012, followed by Alone Together in 2016. Cockrell simultaneously developed solo demos that merged the emotional directness of his earlier work with the polished sound of his Leagues output. Upon hearing those recordings, Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes arranged introductions at ATO Records, culminating in the label's release of If in Case You Feel the Same in 2020.
