Biography
An ethnic connection among its founding members sparked the formation of the Apex Theory. Frontman Andy Khachaturian, guitarist Art Karamian, and bassist David Hakopyan all share Armenian roots. During their upbringing in the Los Angeles suburbs, the three absorbed influences ranging from diverse strains of world music to pop, jazz, and classical traditions. Drummer Sammy J. Watson, who lacks Armenian ancestry and spent his early years in Chimacum, WA, completed the lineup after the group struggled to secure a reliable percussionist. A single audition in 1999 formalized Watson’s membership, enabling the band to cultivate a following through energetic performances throughout West Hollywood and nearby venues. The self-released Extendemo EP appeared in 2000, drawing interest from major-label scouts even though the musicians prioritized live shows over contract negotiations. DreamWorks ultimately secured their signature in early 2001. Producer Don Gilmore, known for work with Linkin Park, Pearl Jam, and Sugar Ray, oversaw the self-titled EP that followed later that year. A main-stage appearance on the Vans Warped Tour helped solidify the group’s presence within the alt-metal and post-grunge landscape, where their self-coined “heavy Mediterranean groove” began to attract attention. The debut single “Shhh...(Hope Diggy)” led to a co-headlining slot on the 2002 MTV2 tour alongside Andrew W.K., Pressure 4-5, and Lostprophets. Topsy Turvy, the band’s first full-length studio album, arrived in April 2002, after which they joined that year’s Ozzfest itinerary.
