Formed as a partnership between Jon Brooks of the Advisory Circle and Jim Jupp of Belbury Poly, two leading names linked to Ghost Box, the Belbury Circle departs from the haunting vintage sci-fi, horror-soundtrack, and pastoral psych-folk atmospheres often tied to the pair. Their own releases instead fuse library music with early synth pop, beginning with the 2013 Empty Avenues EP that features John Foxx and continuing through the 2017 full-length Outward Journeys.

Jupp established the U.K.-based Ghost Box in 2004 together with graphic designer Julian House, after which Brooks’ Advisory Circle joined as one of the label’s earliest acts. Belbury Poly and the Advisory Circle later issued a split single through the Ghost Box Study Series in 2012. The Belbury Circle’s first outing arrived the following year as Empty Avenues, a collaboration with synth pop pioneer John Foxx. Outward Journeys followed in 2017, a full-length that recalls bygone technology and childhood day trips, with Foxx appearing once more on two songs.
