Biography
Grafting the muscle and shout-along songcraft of vintage street punk and Oi! with the velocity and fury of hardcore, the Chisel bring a fresh energy to the U.K. punk scene with a musical attack that pleases old-school and up-to-date fans alike. The impassioned bellow of lead singer Callum Graham propelled the group to sudden attention when their debut album, Retaliation, arrived in 2022 and landed with the force of a boot to the face. Their follow-up, 2024's What a Fucking Nightmare, arrived with marginally more polished production that left the original force and urgency intact.
Guitarist Charlie Manning-Walker, also known as Chubby Charles, and drummer Nicholas Sarnella founded the Chisel in 2020 after both had played in the U.K. hardcore band Arms Race. Once Arms Race disbanded in 2019, the pair sought a new project and connected with singer Callum Graham through Sarnella; Graham's forceful, full-throated delivery suited their uncompromising approach, and the addition of guitarist Ross Jones plus bassist Tom Ellis completed the initial lineup that began performing live. The band issued its first EP, Deconstructive Surgery, in 2020, followed in January 2021 by the three-song single Come See Me, which marked the arrival of guitarist Luke Younger in place of Ross Jones. Before 2021 ended, the group put out the three-song flexi Enough Said and contributed the otherwise unreleased track "Cry Your Eyes Out" to a flexi included with Issue 60 of New Noise Magazine.
Early in 2021 the Chisel released their first full-length, Retaliation, on the British label La Vida Es Un Mus. Favorable notices and an opening slot for the Circle Jerks on a major U.K. tour helped spread awareness, leading to a four-song split EP with Mexican punks Mess. Tom Ellis departed in 2022 and was replaced on bass by Momo Bitume, who left less than a year later; Jean De L'arbalete then joined on bass while Nicholas Sarnella exited and Lee Munday came aboard as drummer. Following U.K. dates with the Chats and U.S. shows with G.B.H., the Chisel signed with the American punk imprint Pure Noise Records, which gave Retaliation its initial American release. In 2024 Pure Noise issued the band's second LP, the bruisingly powerful What a Fucking Nightmare.
