The Exit

Formed in 1999, The Exit came together as a New York City punk trio. Ben Brewer and Gunnar already shared a long history as childhood friends, whereas bassist Tim Shaya entered the picture as a newcomer once the initial lineup took shape. The group issued an early EP to establish momentum, yet Shaya’s exit soon stalled progress and prompted Brewer to enroll in college for political science studies. Still drawn to music, Brewer reconnected with that drive after an unexpected encounter with Jeff DaRosa, who ultimately signed on and helped steer the band toward gigs in Boston before they secured rehearsal space back in New York City. Demo recordings were left with producer Daniel Rey, who responded by helming the trio’s first full-length record. Released in summer 2002, the album appeared under the name New Beat. Home For An Island arrived two years afterward.
