James Reid on vocals and guitar, joined by bassist Matt Thomas and drummer Hamish Gee, forms a trio whose core sound merges folk-rock roots with occasional electronic touches. Their album Supersystem and its single "Pressure Man" brought the group the Best New Zealand Band award for 1999. While making Communicate the band tracked material in Auckland and London alongside Foo Fighters' producer Gil Norton, whose input supplied fresh sonic layers and drew out vocal parallels between Reid and Peter Gabriel. One standout track is the ambient rocker "As Good As It Gets."
