Stuart Moxham launched The Gist while still active in Young Marble Giants, the pioneering post-punk and twee-pop outfit he helped shape. Their debut single reached stores in December 1980, six weeks before YMG disbanded. The group’s sole album, Embrace the Herd, arrived in May 1981; although critics responded positively, the reception fell short of the acclaim given Young Marble Giants, even as the record displayed a comparable gift for dynamic yet restrained arrangements. A pair of additional singles appeared before the project wound down around 1984. Rather than working with a stable lineup, Moxham enlisted a rotating cast of collaborators for these sessions, drawing on former YMG members Alison Statton and Phil Moxham along with musicians from fellow Rough Trade acts Essential Logic and Swell Maps. He subsequently released several recordings under his own name.
