The Last Detail unites Erin Moran, known from A Girl Called Eddy, with Mehdi Zannad of Fugu. Each had long operated as a somewhat reclusive figure in the early-2000s chamber pop and space age pop worlds. Drawing on their shared strengths in composition and orchestration, the pair shaped a reflective, refined strain of vintage pop for their self-titled debut, issued in 2018.

Their partnership originated well before the two ever crossed paths. Zannad had already developed a deep admiration for A Girl Called Eddy’s 2004 self-titled release, while Moran acquired Fugu’s inaugural album at a neighborhood store upon its 2000 appearance. At that stage both musicians were immersed in opulent, heartfelt pop, though Moran leaned toward meticulous song construction and Zannad gravitated toward textural exploration. Following an extended interval marked by only occasional performances and recordings, the two finally connected and began collaborating in 2014.

Initial writing and taping sessions took place across London and Paris, with ideas exchanged in both directions. Several tracks were forwarded to Elefant Records, prompting the label to commission a complete album. Augmented by guitarist Olivier Marguerit, bassist Didier Perrin, Tahiti 80’s Xavier Boyer (in whose studio the bulk of the work occurred), and an expansive roster of additional players, the duo assembled a richly arranged chamber pop set that evoked their earlier creative peak without descending into simple reminiscence. Songwriting and lead vocal duties were divided between them, although several pieces emerged from joint efforts. Elefant released the resulting self-titled album in late 2018, its artwork created by Julian House, whose design credits include Stereolab and Broadcast.
