Biography
Though active well after Orange County punk reached its height, the Last Gang have sustained its sonic and ethical principles across nearly twenty years, weathering extended breaks, shifting personnel, and an extended association with Fat Wreck Chords, the storied regional imprint.
The band originated as a vehicle for singer/guitarist Brenna Red, who had previously kept time behind the kit in the all-female punk group Civet. Assembled in 2004, the quartet issued an independent, self-titled full-length in 2008. Following the 2010 EP Continuity Breakout, Red shelved the endeavor to play with another area outfit, Fiction Reform, only to reactivate the Last Gang in 2013 with an altered roster and another self-released effort, Employee's Picks, Vol. 1.
Drawing audible inspiration from the Distillers and Joan Jett, the trio—completed at that point by bassist Sean Viele and drummer Robert Wantland—secured a pivotal opportunity in 2017 when Fat Mike, co-founder of NOFX and the Fat Wreck Chords label, offered them a deal during a nationwide tour. Their first release on the imprint, Keep Them Counting, arrived the following year. Red’s abrasive vocal style and the band’s economical three-chord constructions—whose lyrics veered between bleak resignation and resilient optimism—gained further clarity on the Clash-inflected sequel Noise Noise Noise (2021), which introduced lead guitarist Ken Aquino. The 2024 album Obscene Daydreams marked the arrival of drummer Sam Mankinem.
