The Queens embody the quintessential South African township sound whenever they appear alongside deep-voiced "groaner" Simon Mahlathini in live settings or on recordings. Formed in 1964 strictly as a studio harmony ensemble, the group rose to wider recognition during the 1970s through its forceful vocal approach and the unyielding mbaqanga support of its backing musicians. A number of the founding members have lately joined Mahlathini on American stages, where their lively choreography and robust vocal blends have drawn enthusiastic responses from listeners abroad. Their performances also feature prominently alongside those of fellow female ensembles on the compilation Soweto Never Sleeps - Classic Female Zulu Jive (Shanachie 43041).
