Richard Myklebust from Stereo 21 joined forces with Linn Frøkedal and Njål Clementsen of Low Frequency in Stereo along with Fredrik Vogsborg from Casiokids, establishing Megaphonic Thrift during 2008. The quartet, already active in Bergen’s noise-pop community, naturally gravitated toward sharp melodies framed by piercing feedback, issuing their opening 7" single “Acid Blues/Mad Mary” that November. An international agreement with Deadly People Records soon followed, yielding the EP A Thousand Years of Deconstruction by the close of 2009. After moving to Hype City, the band performed at EuroSonic, the International Live Music Contest, and SXSW before unveiling its first album, Decay Decoy, in early 2011. Its self-titled second record appeared the next year through Club AC30, while the third LP, Sun Stare Sound, came out on YAP Records in 2015. That release earned a Spellemann Award in the indie category and gained a vinyl edition via Old Flame Records in 2016. Late that same year the group issued the more experimental Få Meg Til Verden i Tide—its initial Norwegian-language project—on Neues Records, with the vinyl edition arriving on Old Flame the following spring.
