Biography
A quartet known for its energetic performances blending rock and soul from earlier eras, The New Respects consists of the Fitzgerald siblings Alexandria, Alexis, and Darius along with their cousin Jasmine Mullen. Raised in Nashville by a preacher father, the twins Alexandria on guitar and Alexis on bass together with brother Darius on drums were immersed in gospel during their upbringing. Mullen, who handles vocals, encountered a broader spectrum of musical styles at home since both of her parents worked as songwriters within the Christian music sector, and her mother Nicole C. Mullen had become a well-known recording artist by the early 2000s. The group originated during high school under the name John Hancock Band, centering initially on an indie folk approach. Their style evolved toward greater dynamism once early rock, R&B, blues, and soul began shaping their music. They inked a deal with Capitol CMG in 2016 and adopted the moniker The New Respects. After releasing two singles toward the end of that year, their first EP Here Comes Trouble came out in early 2017. In May 2018, the standalone track "Freedom" was issued.
