Biography
The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, known in its native tongue as Det Norske Kammerorchester, originated as a student ensemble before attaining global recognition through extensive high-profile tours and partnerships with distinguished soloists alongside visiting conductors.
Its origins trace to 1975, when violinist Bjarne Fiskum assembled student performers in Oslo for a series of summer concerts. Conductor Terje Tønnesen, recognizing Oslo’s demand for a compact ensemble, founded the group formally in 1977 and remained its sole music director until stepping down in summer 2021. Violinist Iona Brown held the co-artistic director post from 1981 until 2001, after which violinist Isabelle van Keulen assumed the role beginning in 2009. Pianist Leif Ove Andsnes joined as principal guest conductor in 2002, while the roster has drawn additional prominent visitors and collaborators such as clarinetist Martin Fröst and cellist Steven Isserlis. Flexible membership allows the ensemble to expand or contract as needed, although a stable core of players has sustained its artistic identity. Performances have taken place at the University of Oslo and other Norwegian halls, complemented by repeated tours across Europe, Asia, and North America.
Recording activity commenced soon after the orchestra’s establishment, with a 1978 contribution to the BIS release Virtuoso Flute Concerti of the Baroque alongside flutist Per Øien. More than twenty-five further albums have followed on BIS, Lawo Classics, Simax, and additional imprints, encompassing Scandinavian repertoire, early twentieth-century scores, and standard Classical and Romantic works. In 2021 the orchestra partnered with violinist Pekka Kuusisto for an album featuring compositions by Nico Muhly and Philip Glass.
