Biography
Seattle indie psych act the Pharmacy originated when high-school friends Scott Yoder and Brendhan Bowers united through their mutual passion for pop music's more experimental edges. At first Yoder and Bowers experimented with a noisy garage punk approach, yet their approach gradually shifted across dance-pop, psychedelic textures, and atmospheric nods to '60s garage and chamber pop. The group's stable lineup settled into a trio featuring Yoder on guitar and vocals, Bowers on drums and vocals, and keyboardist Stefan Rubicz, even as additional musicians rotated in for specific tours and studio work. While the members pursued college studies the Pharmacy performed only occasionally, until a 2005 tour backing and opening for Kimya Dawson established them as a consistent live act. Their first album, B.F.F., appeared that same year on the Seattle imprint Don't Stop Believin' Records. Increased road work followed, yielding several 7" singles and the 2008 full-length Choose Yr. Own Adventure. In 2009 the band relocated temporarily to New Orleans, where they captured their lo-fi third album Weekend entirely on four-track cassette. Subsequent travels took them repeatedly through Europe and Mexico as well as numerous festivals, and they issued split records alongside Japanther and Baby Birds Don't Drink Milk. By 2012 the Pharmacy delivered both the album Stoned & Alone and the EP Josephine, shifting toward a retro sensibility rooted in '60s pop figures such as the Kinks and the Zombies. They sustained that direction on the 2014 release Spells.
