Biography
A vibrant pop ensemble rooted in burlesque tradition, the Pussycat Dolls craft upbeat dance anthems that blend electronic, hip-hop, and R&B elements. Emerging from the renowned Los Angeles neo-burlesque collective sharing their name, the Pussycat Dolls achieved broad recognition via their 2005 Top Five Billboard entry PCD, which delivered the hit singles "Don't Cha," "Stickwitu," and "Buttons." Chart momentum continued with their next release, 2008's Doll Domination, alongside a dedicated reality series, until the ensemble dissolved in 2010. The Pussycat Dolls returned in 2019, delivering their track "React" during the U.K.'s X Factor: Celebrity finale.
Choreographer Robin Antin established the Pussycat Dolls in 1995 in Los Angeles as a contemporary burlesque dance revue housed at the Viper Room nightclub. Guided by Antin's vision, the Dolls built early attention through provocative routines paired with tracks from the '50s and '60s. By 2001 they had shifted operations to Los Angeles' Roxy nightclub, drawing actresses and models eager for one-night turns as a Pussycat Doll. Christina Aguilera, Pamela Anderson, Kelly Osbourne, P!nk, Britney Spears, Carmen Electra, and Gwen Stefani ranked among those who joined the Dolls in their playful cabaret performances. Visibility increased with a role in the 2003 film Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle and repeated television spots, frequently alongside Carmen Electra.
Capitalizing on mounting interest, Antin secured a development agreement with Interscope Records and steered the act toward a complete pop format. By 2003 the Pussycat Dolls' roster had stabilized around lead vocalist (and prior Eden's Crush participant) Nicole Scherzinger together with Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, Melody Thornton, and Kimberly Wyatt. They issued the Cee Lo Green-produced single "Don't Cha" featuring special guest Busta Rhymes in April 2005. The track rose to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Dance Club Songs chart. Their debut album PCD arrived that September, incorporating production and songwriting input from will.i.am, Timbaland, Ron Fair, and additional contributors, and reached number five on the Billboard 200. Beyond "Don't Cha," the project yielded further number one singles such as "Buttons" and "Stickwitu," the latter earning a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
Original member Bachar departed in March 2008 to launch a solo path. Proceeding as a five-piece, the Pussycat Dolls issued their second album Doll Domination that September. Supported by the Top Ten single "When I Grow Up," the set peaked at number four on the Billboard 200. After the group's 2009 world tour, speculation grew over internal friction. By the close of 2010 the Pussycat Dolls had essentially disbanded.
In the aftermath, Scherzinger concentrated on solo projects, releasing 2011's Killer Love and 2014's Big Fat Lie. Reunion talk surfaced by 2017. In November 2019 Scherzinger and several prior Pussycat Dolls members reconvened, offering a medley of hits that included "Buttons," "When I Grow Up," and "Don't Cha," plus the new song "React," on the finale of Britain's The X Factor: Celebrity. Post-reunion the ensemble launched a live tour and appeared on singer Meghan Trainor's track "Genetics" from her 2020 album Treat Myself.
