Biography
Emerging in the aftermath of the multi-platinum girl group Pussycat Dolls, Girlicious formed as a pop quartet whose sound drew from sexually charged slick R&B/pop. Robin Antin, creator and founder of the Pussycat Dolls, assembled the lineup in 2008 with Nichole Cordova, Tiffanie Anderson, Chrystina Sayers, and Natalie Mejia. To extend the global reach of her earlier venture, Antin launched a reality television series titled Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious, drawing thousands of hopefuls who auditioned for a chance to join the next breakout act. She narrowed the field to 15 contestants, who then faced demanding dance routines alongside group and solo vocal showcases while judges progressively eliminated contenders until only four remained.
During the finale Antin had intended to cut one additional participant and finalize a trio, yet she reversed course at the eleventh hour and committed to a foursome, so Cordova, Anderson, Sayers, and Mejia all advanced together. Immediately afterward the quartet issued the digital EP Like Me/Stupid S**t. The release achieved strong digital-download numbers, with “Like Me” reaching number one on Canadian video rotations and number four on the Canadian Hot 100; the track also appeared on the Billboard Pop 100, driven largely by download activity. Their self-titled debut album was scheduled for September 2008, and the group joined the Backstreet Boys on the Unbreakable Tour that summer to promote the project.
