Hailing from California, the Rangers operate as both a hip-hop ensemble and a dance troupe that spearheaded the 2009 surge of “jerkin’.” Their uploads positioned them among the year’s leading “jerk crews” on video-sharing platforms, surpassing one million views while prompting adolescents across the country to adopt “jerkin’,” an intense hip-hop dance style rooted in the 2008 “krumping” wave and the breakdancing movement of the 1980s. In August 2009 the group unveiled Jerkin Is a Habit, Vol. 1, a “Rangers Presents” project that showcased material from the Rangers alongside contributions by the New Boyz, Baby Dollz, and Jhawk.
