Biography
As Seattle's hip-hop community gained momentum toward the end of the 2000s, a crew such as the Saturday Knights was bound to gain traction locally by anchoring its sound in the city's globally celebrated alternative and indie-rock stronghold. Drawing from an eclectic mix of rap and rock styles—among them '60s psychedelia, power pop, '80s hip-hop, and indie rock—the playful, irreverent outfit formed around MCs Tilson and Barfly, both from the underground Seattle rap collective Oldominion, alongside producer DJ Suspence (Spencer Manio) and guitarist-keyboardist B-Web (Brian Weber, ex-Dub Narcotic Sound System). What began as a casual jest soon took shape when Tilson and Barfly started improvising inebriated rhymes over melodies rooted in '60s pop, doo wop, and barbershop quartet traditions.
One afternoon DJ Suspence dared the pair to take the concept live and slotted the still-nonexistent act as support for Rjd2 in 2005; the Saturday Knights materialized on stage that evening. Their energetic performances quickly built a devoted Seattle audience, leading to shared bills with Harvey Danger, Death Cab for Cutie, Chromeo, and Lady Sovereign. A four-song demo from 2006 drew widespread notice from local journalists, who published numerous profiles and previews of the group's shows throughout the following year. During those 2007 appearances, B-Web scaled back his involvement while Michael Jaworski, guitarist for the Cops, filled out the trio onstage. Light in the Attic, the city's indie-rock imprint, ultimately acquired the demo, which was remastered and issued as the self-titled debut EP in spring 2007.
