Biography
Known foremost for fronting the Finnish heavy metal group Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus, whose name renders as Trio Neckshot, this singer, guitarist, and songwriter has also contributed vocals and guitar to Lyijykomppania, translated as Leadcompany, and to Aku Ankkuli. From 2006 through 2007 he hosted a cultural television program on Finnish TV.
Timo Aulis Rautiainen entered the world on January 25, 1963, in Sulkava, Finland. Early in his recording life he continued working full time as a student counselor, a role that prompted the press to brand him “The Grim Teacher,” yet mounting success later enabled him to devote himself entirely to music as a professional.
He first gained recognition as singer-guitarist of Lyijykomppania, a Finnish-language heavy metal band possessing a devoted cult following; the group began its official recording career in 1990 after an earlier formation and dissolution in the early 1980s. Once Lyijykomppania ended in 1996, Trio Niskalaukaus was assembled at once with the explicit aim of crafting metal songs centered on ecological themes. By 2001 the band was regularly entering the Finnish charts and, following its debut German-language album, toured Germany alongside HiM. After multiple commercially strong releases, the group entered hiatus in 2004 and was formally disbanded late in 2006.
Since 2002 a steady collaborator has been Jarkko Martikainen of Y.U.P. Rautiainen’s initial solo album, the 2005 release Sarvivuori (“Horn Mountain”), was produced and partly composed by Martikainen and included appearances by several prominent guests, among them Nightwish founding member Tuomas Holopainen and Alexander Kuoppala, formerly the guitarist for Children of Bodom. Although reviews were mixed, the record achieved solid sales.
Rautiainen had intended to issue only a single solo project, yet Sarvivuori’s reception prompted the 2007 follow-up. His longstanding interest in folk music had already surfaced on singles and tribute-album contributions, where he proved equally willing to reinterpret the catalog of underground legend M.A. Numminen or the blues of Tuomari Nurmio. These leanings, together with his affinity for acts such as Hedningarna, shaped Loppuun Ajettu (“Driven to the End”). On that album Rautiainen broadened his palette beyond metal and hard rock to encompass flirtations with folk, blues, and even rap.
