Tobias Ringborg built parallel careers of distinction, beginning as a violinist before shifting emphasis to opera conducting, a field in which he ranks among Scandinavia’s most prolific practitioners with repeated engagements throughout Denmark and English-speaking countries.

Born in Stockholm on November 2, 1973, he grew up with an educational administrator father named Erland Ringborg and a brother, Patrik Ringborg, who also became a conductor. Ringborg studied violin at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, completing his diploma in 1994; that same year he captured Sweden’s Soloist Prize and moved to New York for further training at the Juilliard School, from which he graduated in 1996. Returning to Europe, he appeared frequently as soloist with Swedish orchestras.

Although he still performs as soloist and chamber musician, conducting gradually claimed his attention. At age ten he had already obtained a score of Puccini’s Tosca and pored over it repeatedly, acquiring both a lasting admiration for the composer’s operas and an instinctive habit of studying music from a conductor’s perspective. After taking a conducting course, he entered a 2000 competition in Helsingborg and emerged the winner. He deepened his knowledge of operatic and symphonic repertoire through several years of teaching in school music programs. By 2001 he had led Verdi’s La traviata at Folkoperan in Stockholm and Puccini’s La bohème at the Royal Swedish Opera. For two seasons he served on the staff of Malmö Opera, expanding his repertory; Italian opera and the works of Mozart have remained central to his activities ever since. He has returned regularly to the Royal Swedish Opera while also conducting at the Norwegian Opera, the Danish National Opera, and Oper Leipzig, among other companies. Festival and regional engagements have taken him to Garsington Opera and Scottish Opera in Britain as well as multiple houses in Australia and New Zealand.

Ringborg has likewise pursued a symphonic career, making his Barbican debut in London in 2005. He led the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic at the 2011 Nobel Prize Ceremony and has appeared with the Norrköping Symphony, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and Germany’s Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal.

More than fifteen recordings document his work as both violinist and conductor on the Caprice, Sterling, and Naxos labels, among others. He has recorded chamber and orchestral music by Helena Munktell in both capacities, including the composer’s Violin Sonata in E flat major, Op. 21, released on the BIS label in 2021.
