Biography
Veteran performer Tom Ball has long distinguished himself through his enduring collaboration with guitarist Kenny Sultan. In their blues-focused acoustic duo sets, which frequently omit bass and drums, Ball concentrates on vocals while contributing harmonica. Within blues circles he is primarily recognized as a vocalist, yet he also commands respect as an instrumentalist; apart from those Sultan pairings, his solo acoustic guitar work aligns with the approach of John Fahey, Leo Kottke, Robbie Basho, and Stefan Grossman. The late Fahey, who lived from 1939 to 2001, established the foundational principles of picker music, a style of unaccompanied folk guitar playing that has left a deep mark on Ball’s earthy, roots-oriented technique. Although picker music sits within the broader folk tradition, its practitioners commonly absorb influences ranging from Woody Guthrie, Bill Monroe, and the Carter Family to Robert Johnson and Blind Lemon Jefferson. Acoustic country blues, bluegrass, old-time country, and string-band traditions have likewise shaped the genre, and Ball draws from each of them. European classical repertoire forms another element of his instrumental vocabulary, enabling him to move seamlessly from Johann Sebastian Bach to Merle Travis. Solo unaccompanied recordings remain relatively scarce in his discography, though the self-produced Guitar Music, issued on the Kicking Mule label in 1987, demonstrates his capabilities in that format. His duets with Sultan and his independent instrumental pieces share a common grounding in roots music, with Ball consistently infusing blues sensibility whether or not the material follows a twelve-bar structure.
Born in 1950 and raised in Los Angeles, Ball began playing guitar at age eleven and harmonica at fourteen. In 1978 he relocated to Santa Barbara, California, and the following year he teamed with Sultan. Their partnership, modeled in part on the legendary Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee duo, yielded the debut album Who Drank My Beer? for Kicking Mule in 1983. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s the pair released additional recordings on the Chicago-based Flying Fish label.
