Biography
In the early years of the new millennium, Tom Chaplin achieved widespread attention on both sides of the Atlantic as the lead singer of the British rock outfit Keane. Working with the ensemble, he helped deliver one of the U.K.’s all-time top-selling albums when their 2004 debut Hopes and Fears topped the charts, a success followed by three further number-one records that carried into the next decade. Between those group projects, Chaplin began exploring solo work, unveiling The Wave in 2016. A seasonal collection arrived the year after, coinciding with Keane’s return to finish out the decade. Chaplin’s third studio album, Midpoint, surfaced in 2022.
Originating from Hastings in East Sussex, he first entered music in 1995 after being invited to sing with a local covers act called the Lotus Eaters. Rebranded as Keane, the band secured a deal with Island in 2003 and broke through the following year with Hopes and Fears. The group’s sincere, piano-centered sound struck an immediate chord, sending the debut to number one and later ranking it the U.K.’s eleventh biggest-selling album of the 2000s. Anchored by Chaplin’s expansive vocals, Keane sustained mainstream momentum through the ensuing decade with the 2006 blockbuster Under the Iron Sea, then Perfect Symmetry in 2008 and Strangeland in 2012. After a 2013 retrospective collection, the band paused, freeing Chaplin to launch his own career.
Still affiliated with Island for solo releases, he issued The Wave in late 2016, which rose to number three on the U.K. album chart. Following a promotional tour the next year, he turned to a Christmas project that departed from conventional holiday fare. Produced with David Kosten, Twelve Tales of Christmas contained eight new songs written by Chaplin plus fresh takes on four existing tracks, among them East 17’s “Stay Another Day” and Joni Mitchell’s “River.” Keane’s fifth album, Cause and Effect, arrived in 2019 and became their first full-length to miss the summit, peaking at number two. Chaplin released the solo single “Midpoint” in July 2022 ahead of the album of the same name that September.
