Biography
Emerging in 1970, Ton Steine Scherben ranked among Germany’s earliest authentic rock ensembles rather than acts that merely replicated American and British material, and while conventional commercial breakthroughs eluded them, their impact across the country endured for decades. Fronted by vocalist Rio Reiser alongside guitarist R.P.S. Lanrue, drummer Funky Götzner, bassist Kai Sichtermann, and keyboardist Martin Paul, the group—soon abbreviated as TSS—issued multiple self-financed independent albums whose contents often proved sharply political and contentious. Over time the band edged toward more introspective themes in its songwriting yet retained an uncompromising outsider posture that later observers would label “punk.” The original lineup dissolved in 1985, yet Reiser’s passing in 1996 prompted the remaining members to reconvene for a farewell concert that year, after which they regrouped once more in 2005 for a well-received reunion tour.
